Recycling chemical plastics

De uitdaging

Today, still far too much plastic ends up as waste. We can mechanically recycle a small proportion of this, but this is far from being possible with all waste plastics. Entrepreneurs and scientists looked for new ways to produce green aromatics from waste plastics and biomass. Aromatics are key building blocks for the chemical industry. We can chemically recycle plastics with green aromatics.

Much plastic waste is not suitable for mechanical recycling, such as packagings that are made of several layers of plastics and hybrid colouring agents. Colouring agents and additives are not dissolved during mechanical recycling.

Plastic recycling

With the new technology (a chemical recycling process), we can chemically recycle plastic waste. This is how green, bio-based aromatics make a huge contribution in creating sustainability in the chemical and plastic industries.

Plastic recycling

This is what we do

It started with research into green aromatics conducted by the University of Groningen. The BioBTX company further developed the process. Initially, the focus was on using biomass as a raw material for green aromatics. Now, the focus has switched to using waste plastic as a raw material for green aromatics.

Where we stand now

The Zernike Campus of the University of Groningen has a pilot factory. In addition, BioBTX in Delftzijl is going to build a factory that is economically viable. Starting from 2027, this factory will chemically recycle 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually.

What’s next?

Funding is needed for the scale-up of a viable factory. We are looking for funding. We are also constantly busy with optimising the process on a large scale. And we continue to look for new applications for the various product flows.

Our main products are the chemical building blocks benzine, toluene and xylene. We can make many materials with these. Our process is also as circular as possible. We rely on residual gas, for example, for our own energy use
